TSA Prepares for Record-Breaking Thanksgiving Travel Surge

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for what is expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period ever. Between Tuesday, Nov. 26, and Monday, Dec. 2, the agency anticipates screening 18.3 million passengers, a 6% increase compared to 2023 and a significant 17% jump since 2022.
The three peak travel days will likely be Nov. 26 and 27, just before Thanksgiving, and Dec. 1, the Sunday following the holiday. TSA predicts more than 2.8 million travelers on Tuesday, over 2.9 million on Wednesday, and a record-breaking 3 million on Sunday.
"This Thanksgiving season is shaping up to be among the busiest we've seen," said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas. "The dedication of TSA personnel ensures safe and efficient travel for millions. Travelers should plan ahead, follow TSA's guidelines, and consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck® to ease their journey and enhance security."
In 2024, TSA has consistently set new passenger volume records, with the busiest day occurring on July 7, when over 3 million people passed through checkpoints nationwide. This Thanksgiving could surpass that milestone.
"TSA is ready for record numbers this holiday season," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. "In collaboration with our partners, we’re optimizing staffing and maintaining our goal of keeping wait times under 10 minutes for TSA PreCheck and under 30 minutes for standard lanes. I’m grateful for our team’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel."
Travel Tips:
To streamline the process, passengers are encouraged to pack smart, starting with an empty bag to avoid bringing prohibited items. Liquids, gels, and aerosols over 3.4 ounces should go in checked luggage, including gravy, cranberry sauce, and jams. Solid foods like baked goods can be carried on.
TSA PreCheck members enjoy expedited screening and should ensure their Known Traveler Number (KTN) is linked to their reservation. For additional assistance, travelers can visit TSA.gov or contact @AskTSA on social media.
