Evelyn Smith, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association (JHTA)

One day prior to the opening of the Caribbean Travel Marketplace we caught Evelyn Smith, president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association on the fly, while attending an executive meeting of the Ministers of Tourism in Nassau.  We spoke of the 50 years of the JHTA and its community relationship and its advisory role within the Jamaican government.

What is your view of the new Minister of Tourism, Dr. Wykeham McNeill?
Dr. McNeill has long been well informed on the state of tourism in Jamaica and many consider him as the "shadow" minister of the opposition party. His family has links to the tourism sector and we have high expectations that he will work with our association very closely.

What is the composition of the JHTA?
The JHTA has six chapters with regional and international members and both with their particular interests.  The smaller ones we now encourage to utilize social media for marketing purposes in order to minimize overhead. Our association has very strong regulations in order to maintain the integrity of our product.  This year we've seen a 2 percent increase in tourism, excluding cruise ships.

What are the primary events attracting visitors?
The Jamaican Jazz and Blues Festival, Emancipation, Reggae music and most importantly the Bob Marley museum and birthday celebration are the key factors.

What is your view on Negril and its beach erosion?
This is a combined problem stemming from inadequate past practices along with nature’s fury from the 90's to early 2000.  We're presently studying the situation and seeking funding both regionally and internationally.

Port Antonio and the Blue Lagoon, what's on the horizon?
JHTA is keeping a close eye on the environmental impact of increasing tourism in this area.

Where is the Latino market headed?
This market is a "sleeping giant…" one that has enormous potential and is requiring us to introduce Spanish into the school systems.

How long is the president's term for the JHTA?
Normally it's for a period of one year, but not uncommonly lasts two with reelection.
