A new global study by Experience Abu Dhabi, the destination brand of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, uncovers what children aged 5 to 12 truly desire from their holidays—and it's more than just treats and screen time.

With over 7,000 kids and parents surveyed across nine countries, the findings show that children are yearning for connection, imagination, and shared adventures. In fact, 90% of kids want holidays that help them make new friends, and 97% value quality time with family.

In an increasingly digital world, kids are craving real-life experiences—from splashing at a waterpark to teaming up on scavenger hunts at aquariums or libraries. A remarkable 91% of children are influenced by their peers’ adventures, and 95% are excited to try activities they can later talk about with friends. At the same time, imagination is key: 89% of kids want trips that feel like stepping into their favorite movies, video games, or fantasy stories.

Make-believe play is also high on the wish list. 85% of kids dream of becoming a race car driver, astronaut, or zookeeper—even if just for a day. According to H.E. Nouf Mohamed Al-Bushlaibi, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications at DCT Abu Dhabi, “Kids want connection, adventure, and the freedom to play out the stories they love. Abu Dhabi brings all of that to life as a place where children can dream big and feel right at home.”

Country-specific insights revealed fascinating patterns: French kids love waterparks, Indian kids lean toward museum visits, and German children crave food market experiences. Meanwhile, UAE kids demand big adventures, Chinese kids want free time to play, and American kids are especially drawn to imaginative role-play. From the UK to Saudi Arabia, kids everywhere are looking for personalized, passion-driven vacations.

The message is clear: today’s children are curious, imaginative, and social. They want holidays that reflect their interests, spark creativity, and allow them to connect with family and new friends alike. For parents planning the ultimate getaway, the formula is simple—fun, freedom, and a little make-believe magic go a long way.
