UN Tourism, TUI Care Foundation All in for Rural Artisans in Africa

UN Tourism, in collaboration with the TUI Care Foundation, has launched the 'Colourful Cultures' initiative, inviting artisans in rural tourism destinations across Africa to apply for small grants aimed at supporting local creative talent.

The initiative, focused on empowering artisans—particularly women and youth—will promote sustainable economic opportunities and the preservation of cultural heritage in Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, The Gambia, Tunisia, and Zambia.

This program seeks to enhance the benefits of tourism for rural artisans, providing a maximum grant of EUR 20,000 for each selected project. The initiative highlights the importance of tourism in supporting local economies, creating jobs, and preserving cultural heritage.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili expressed pride in launching the 'Colourful Cultures' program, noting its role in empowering local communities and advancing sustainable development. "Tourism has the potential to deliver significant socio-economic benefits in rural areas, preserving cultural heritage and creating jobs," he said.

Thomas Ellerbeck, Chairman of the TUI Care Foundation, emphasized the partnership's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. "By supporting artists and artisans, we are preserving cultural heritage and promoting economic growth and social well-being," he noted.

Civil society and non-governmental organizations working in rural tourism destinations are encouraged to submit their projects by December 2, with the program expected to improve the visibility and capacity of rural artisans to engage with the tourism economy.
