The city of Miami (United States) was officially awarded Thursday morning the title of Iberian-American Capital of Gastronomic Culture 2019, on the heels of an official delivery held last month within the framework of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain.

During the first delivery that took place in Madrid last month, Teté Bezerra, president of the Brazilian Institute of Tourism (Embratur); Victor Muntane, president of Visit USA; and Rafael Ansón, president of the Iberian-American Gastronomy Academy, were all in attendance.

Miami is the fifth Iberian-American Capital of Gastronomic Culture, succeeding Sao Paulo, which kept that title all through 2018. Previously, the cities of Buenos Aires in 2017, Mexico’s Guanajuato in 2016 and Córdoba (Spain) were previous recipients of that distinction. Madrid will be the next bearer in 2020.

The Iberian-American Capital of Gastronomic Culture will include a series of specific activities to be carried out during the 12 months of 2019. The program of activities has not yet been officially announced, but one of the ideas already in place is to insert the capital in events with weight in the city's cultural calendar, such as the Art Basel fair, which takes place in December.

In addition the city of Miami is expected to host the Gastronomic Olympic Games, to be held for the first time in the city of the state of Florida.
