The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is facing the need to respond to the challenge of how to find a balance between tourism and environmental protection to achieve sustainable development in the Caribbean.

ACS general secretary Rubén Silié spoke Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 7th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism taking place in Trinidad and Tobago until Friday with the participation of tourism ministers, experts, tour-operators, hoteliers and business representatives. Attendees will debate about how to use natural resources and protect the environment at the same time.

The Caribbean official reiterated that the final goal must be that the people directly involved in activity contribute in a sustainable way to the development of their communities, countries and region.

The general secretary explained that the exchange of experience and opportunities in the South-South cooperation are objectives that are fulfilled through these meetings organized by the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
