Domino Park to Open in the Big Apple
New York’s Central Park will soon have some compelling and very unique competition. Though not as massive as the famed and historic 843-acre green space in Manhattan, Domino Park, slated to open in June, is New York City’s most anticipated new public space.
Designed by landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations and privately funded by Brooklyn-based developer Two Trees Management, the new park will include a 1,200-foot-long waterside esplanade, six acres of parkland and recreational offerings catering to all ages.
The exciting, mixed-use park includes many unique offerings as well, such as an “Artifact Walk,” an area that will draw on the history of the adjacent 11-acre industrial site home to the Domino Sugar Factory and the landmarked Refinery Building.
The reclaimed refining and industrial artifacts showcase the story of the sugar trade in New York City and the sugar refining process that occurred on the site for more than a century.
The five-block-long walk includes more than 30 large-scale, hand-picked pieces of salvaged factory machinery. Twenty-one columns from the Raw Sugar Warehouse will support an elevated walkway. Metal screw conveyors once used to move sugar will be used in the new park as steel sculptures.
Additional elements include 36-feet tall cylindrical tanks that once collected syrup during the refining process, mooring bollards, bucket elevators and various dials and meters from the factory with original signage.
The park’s waterfront esplanade meanwhile, will provide a continuous walk along the East River with panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and Williamsburg Bridge.
The passive recreation portion of the park will be located its northern end, from South 2nd Street to Grand Street. The area will feature a Japanese Pine garden, an 80 to 100-person picnic area, a food kiosk, a kids' play area inspired by the sugar refining process, a large sloping lawn and an urban beach with a flat shaded beach and chaise lounges.
As for some of the park’s active recreation amenities, there will be a 1,750-foot linear dog run, two Bocce courts, a 6,300-square foot flexible playing field for various sports and a volleyball court.
