Guerrero Unveils New Culinary Program

The Mexican state of Guerrero is putting the spotlight on its gastronomic offerings with Flavors of Guerrero, a new program designed to promote the traditional culinary options of Acapulco and other tourism destinations.

“Tourists have shown an appreciation and interest for our traditional cuisine and we are responding to that with an initiative that will satisfy their palate and provide them with an experience that complements the first-class beaches we’re known for,” said Sergio Salmeron, Guerrero’s secretary of tourism. “We hope that our visitors will capture, through these authentic dishes, the essence of the state of Guerrero’s identity and its cultural heritage.”

As part of the program, Guerrero has provided restaurateurs with marketing tools and information on the benefits of using local products. On that front, Flavors of Guerrero will promote such local items as Mezcal, coconuts, mangos and cacao.

The program will also include the creation of gastronomic routes. For its part, Acapulco has developed a bicycle route in the tourist zone that incorporates a range of restaurants specializing in local cuisine, including broiled red snapper and hen in red mole sauce.

“The program’s vision is to highlight Guerrero’s cuisine combined with its culture and traditions, and make it an attractive tourism product for foodies across our markets,” said Salmeron. “Each of Guerrero’s eight regions have traditional dishes with unique, endemic ingredients. Guerrero’s cuisine is part of Mexico’s road less traveled when it comes to dining, with some dishes only known and consumed in its places of origin.”

Other tourism destinations in Guerrero include Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo and Taxco.
