The United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) has officially welcomed the first cohort of students to its new Bachelor of Science degree in International Sustainable Tourism. Developed in partnership with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), this three-year program aims to shape future leaders in sustainable tourism, preparing them to drive innovation and sustainability in the global tourism sector.

This pioneering degree has attracted 30 students from diverse backgrounds, hailing from six countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Georgia, and Switzerland. Based in Madrid, the program equips students with the skills needed to foster economic growth while ensuring environmental stewardship. The course combines in-person learning in Madrid and Lucerne with online education to offer a flexible and comprehensive learning experience.

Natalia Bayona, Executive Director of UN Tourism, highlighted the importance of such educational initiatives, stating, "The Bachelor in International Sustainable Tourism is not just a program; it’s a transformative force aimed at cultivating talent for the future of tourism. With the sector needing around 880,000 specialized jobs annually by 2030, this degree plays a critical role in addressing this demand and fostering sustainable growth."

UN Tourism’s educational strategy emphasizes the role of higher education in building a sustainable tourism sector. Tourism is a significant employer of global youth, with over 50% of its workforce under 25. However, many young people face barriers to entering the workforce, and there is a shortage of skilled professionals in the sector. This degree aims to fill that gap by providing specialized training in sustainable tourism practices.

The program's global reach and emphasis on international diversity are key features, designed to attract students from around the world. With Spain and Switzerland, both highly ranked in tourism competitiveness, hosting portions of the course, the program provides an environment that fosters global perspectives and practical knowledge.

The collaboration between HSLU and UN Tourism reflects a shared vision to create an accessible, forward-looking educational platform that empowers the next generation to transform the tourism sector towards sustainability. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing both the educational needs of young people and the evolving demands of the tourism industry.
