Cancun Airport to Consider Further Expansion

Cancun International Airport is poised for additional expansion as the booming destination continues to smash visitor records.

The airport's operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), recently announced its 2019-2023 investment plan, which includes a new Terminal Five at Cancun Airport.

Approximately 6.1 billion pesos ($303.5 million) will be spent on the new terminal as well as upgrades for nearby Cozumel International Airport over the next five years. Both airports saw notable increases in passenger traffic last year.

Construction of Cancun's Terminal Five is expected to begin later this year or by the beginning of 2019. The airport's Terminal Four debuted just last year. Overall, the airport's master development plan calls for a 24.4-billion-peso ($1.2 billion) investment over the next 15 years.

The rapid expansion mirrors Mexico's impressive air connectivity growth. The country is expected to add 1.5 million new seats on direct flights this year.

Cancun, which is Mexico's second-busiest airport behind only Mexico City, is just one of nine airports in southeastern Mexico operated by Asur.
