Cuba's Travel Industry on the Road Ahead

Tourism, Cuba, culture, history, economy, sustainability were some of the many topics broached Wednesday during presentations of the 36th International Tourism Fair, held at the Ambassadors Lounge of the Habana Libre Hotel in the Cuban capital.

Cuba’s Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz started out a number of lectures within the framework of this major travel and tourism event. “This is the fair with the largest turnout in the history of Cuban tourism. We’re pleased to welcome each and every one of you,” he told attendees.

Mr. Marrero underscored the sector’s achievements in 2015, with highlights for the largest number of visitors and the uptick in the amount of travel destinations. However, we’re not fully pleased. There’s a long way to go. Comprehensive quality in all services we offer is our top priority,” he added.

On the other hand, Canada’s Tourism Minister Bardish Shagger underlined the good ties between Cuba and her country. “Friendship between our two nations has lived out through time, mostly because both countries act in the best interest of their people. I commit myself to further collaboration together,” she was quoted as saying.

For his part, UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai, whose keynote speech brought the session to a close, talked about the need to be far more careful in tourism management. “We must pay heed to sustainability within the sector. We must make sure that all people are truly mindful of this. We should also generate innovative financing methods for the future. We are here today to show that everything can be done.”
