The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is facing the need to respond to the challenge of how to find a balance between tourism and environmental protection to achieve sustainable development in the Caribbean. ACS general secretary Rubén Silié spoke Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 7th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism taking place in Trinidad and Tobago until Friday with the participation of tourism ministers, experts, tour-operators, hoteliers and business representatives. Attendees will debate about how to use natural resources and protect the environment at the same time.
All stakeholders in the hospitality industry should play an equal role in policy planning for sustainable tourism development, Luis Chaves, adviser to the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), told participants at the 7th Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development (STC-7) that has drawn the attention to host Tobago. Chaves, whose presentation dealt with "Policy Making and Integration as a Key Starting Point for Sustainable Tourism Intersectoral Planning," told delegates there was a need for communication and consultation among stakeholders, which he said would allow for greater coordination and minimize divergences among them.
